A musical based on the life of Amy Winehouse will debut in Denmark this January. Singer Johanne Louise Schmidt will perform the role of the R&B/soul star, who died from drug and alcohol abuse in July 2011.
The musical will debut at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen and incorporate real music from Winehouse's catalog, as well material from her interviews and concerts, according to Playbill. Producers told the BBC it will focus on "the enormous pressure a sensationalist public put on a young superstar when her problems began."
The Winehouse family aren't involved in the musical, but have nevertheless been involved in continuing to spread her music through a posthumous album. Not knowing anything about Danish or British copyright law, it is unclear to me how the musical could use Amy Winehouse's music without the family's express permission. Can y'all sort that out? It would be amazing if such a musical came stateside.
