I’m not entirely sure how I ended up subscribing to the CLG newsletter, a roundup of hard-hitting political stories that span the globe, but I have not regretted it for one solitary moment. That’s because between relatively sober summaries of under-reported suicide bombings in Afghanistan, they’re running headlines about how U.S. army scientists are spraying St. Louis with radioactive particles and Gaddafi was killed on Nicolas Sarkozy’s orders. These often link to the Daily Mail.
From the name, you’d think Citizens for Legitimate Government was some kind of ultra-nationalist right-wing birther group; in fact, they’re more like extreme-left paranoiacs. They’re certainly to the left of Obama, whom they’ve rebranded as “Obusha”—because Obama is just the same as Bush, you see—and it’s these sorts of stylistic decisions that make me broadly skeptical of the journalistic content of this email. Still, what a wild ride!
Everything is an inside job, the powers that be conspire to pursue war for its own sake, and democracy is largely a myth. Compelling stuff, to be sure, and there’s at least a grain of truth to everything they report. It’s as though Noam Chomsky were mildly deranged and living in the sewers and wanted people to know the truth about their socioeconomic climate but didn’t get very bogged down in the quality of his sources.
And really, why bother? I, for one, want to say “bravo.” In an era where CNN stretches non-events into hours of news coverage, a wacky fringe website that connects the dots we never even saw in the first place deserves acclaim. Who knows, I may even get bored and start believing this stuff.
