In the original Colombian soap opera, Betty La Fea, Betty undergoes a transformation and becomes an attractive young woman and ascends the corporate ladder.

On Ugly Betty, it’s time to make her look and dress more attractively and to start her on her writing career as an editor.  There’s only so many seasons in which to milk the “ugly duckling” aspect of the story.

In the original, Spanish-language TV series, the protagonist is depicted wearing braces for way more than three seasons...Like Lisa Simpson and Lucy (from Peanuts), Betty is destined to always appear the same.

Ironically, this show started off with a better storyline than the Spanish version.  Now the Spanish version as kitschy as it is seems more realistic.  Umph.  I agree with this article and other reviewers so far.
