Your Problem Is You Just Can’t Understand Alexander Wang’s $395 Biker Shorts
October 30, 2009
Few garments that have graced catwalks in recent seasons (save for perhaps Nina Ricci's FW09 8-inch heels, and now Alexander McQueen's SS10 monstrously tall shoes) have caused as much immediate controversy as Alexander Wang's biker shorts for this fall. The point of contention for consumers and critics alike: the shorts' $395 price tag. But ask Wang why exactly the capsule of cycling chic warrants such a seemingly exorbitant cost, and he'll tell you: "the yarn we use is from Italy, the technique is digital weaving, there's a lot that goes into product development that the consumer doesn't necessarily always understand," says The Cut. And, he'll add, "for the people that do understand it, they do get into it, they buy it, and those are the people I'm speaking to. And there will always be people that don't understand what you're doing, but I'm not here to satisfy everyone."
According to Wang, the people that do get it and do buy the high-priced casual clothing and wear it with conviction can be more chic than someone headed to a gala in a “$5,000 evening gown.” He adds, “if someone can put on a white T-shirt and look amazing, it’s much harder.” But, what really trumps both is snagging a pair of Alexander Wang shorts (which originally retailed in the hundreds of dollars) for $34 at Buffalo Exchange in Brooklyn.
