Art That Travels Well

With this crap out of the way, we can turn our attention to art beyond the capabilities of any three-year-old -- make an informed, subtle statement about culture and globalization, for example. The Foley Gallery's "Games of Consequence" -- a collection of photography by Polixeni Papapetrou -- carves into the physical and cultural landscape of rural Australia, making spectacles not out of her subjects but also the setting of the land.

The grounded nature of Papapetrou’s work presents a stark, tangible contrast to the decidedly more abstract group show at Cristinerose Gallery, featuring artists like Sarah Trigg and Ross Racine. Appropriately titled “From Above and Beyond,” this show features artistic depictions of the earthly terrain from a bird’s-eye view. Both shows bow with an opening reception Thursday, September 4, and are mere steps away from each other.
