Badvertising: D*Face @ Black Rat Press

"aPOPcalypse" is not any kind of caveat warning of the pre-release buzz surrounding this particular pop song across the UK -- although the buzz is overwhelming, and a mite frightening. Rather, it's the current London-based show by artist D*Face, who's made a name by taking popular iconography of American advertising art and, err, defacing it. His latest work -- a collection of 20 paintings, street installations, etchings, and sculptures -- goes beyond the basic Manichaean balancing act between good and evil, delving into a world where good has finally triumphed over evil.
Though with the likes of Banksy and Poster Boy at large, anti-consumerist rhetoric has been all but belabored to death—making this exhibition a tricky endeavor. Apart from a witty nom de plume, little else distinguishes him. Granted, his approach is more finessed; the perfect tone to discipline Britain for its proclivity towards mediocre pop, really. Until D*Face goes that route, “aPOPcalypse” is on display at the Black Rat Press Gallery through November 2, although the first part of the exhibition closes after this weekend.
