Will Barack Obama Wear “Borac Obama” Suit?

It’s no secret that the Obama family is hugely influential when it comes to fashion. From propelling relatively unknown designers into superstardom (as Michelle has done with Chicago-based Maria Pinto), to selling out special occasion frocks as a result of having been photographed sporting them (as is the case with Sasha and Malia Obama’s election dresses), to having boots named after them, the First family-Elect’s selling power is unlike any this country has ever seen. Forget VIP sample sales and editorial coverage in high-profile fashion rags; land your garment on a member of this handsome foursome, and you’re as good as CFDA-approved. Better yet, simply name a collection after the family, and you’re likely to move frocks faster than you can say, "Yes we can." Such is the case with a Bosnian clothing concern coincidentally named "Borac."
It seems the manufacturer, “which works with some top-line names, such as Hugo Boss,” reports British Vogue, has named a line of suits after the President-Elect, and these “Borac Obama” business suits are selling like hotcakes. “The designs are flying off the racks in Bosnia and also neighboring Croatia,” adds Vogue. But, the moniker wasn’t chosen simply for its selling power. It turns out Borac’s success relies heavily on the fact that the US invested money in the manufacturer “to help restart production after Bosnia’s 1992-1995 war.” Thus, the gesture is laced with genuine admiration for the man who, for many, represents a particularly flattering image of the country he’ll soon helm. Even if his attempts at dressed-down fashion appear to be more Seinfeld than casual chic.
