Brown-Eyed Girl Desperate for Blue Eyes? Don’t Believe the Hype
August 31, 2009
As plastic surgery becomes as commonplace as a yearly physical, more and more people are opting for absurd procedures in the name of vanity and pop-culture adulation. And with advances in technology come new, diabolical ways to alter our appearance. If it’s Beyonce’s booty we covet, we can opt for a “Brazilian butt lift.” You say it’s a slimmer waist you need? Screw the thousand daily sit-ups -- just get a couple of ribs removed. All of these options to change our looks has left us suffering from some type of mass delusion about what actually looks good these days. So it shouldn't surprise that a woman in London decided that it was a good idea to go to Panama for a procedure that would permanently turn her naturally dark brown eyes an alluring shade of Barbie blue?
She was sorely disappointed when she got not only the aqua-blue eyes she felt were so imperative, but near-blindness as well. Upon arriving back in London, she was immediately rushed into surgery to have the implants removed.
At first I thought this bitch was crazy and put her squarely in the “well, what the hell did she expect” category. Not unlike Krissy from last week’s Truth Be Told: I’m Addicted to Plastic Surgery episode who crossed the border for her boob job because she “thought the medical care would actually be better in Mexico than in the United States.” Riiiight. And then she was surprised that her botched boob job left her with a rotting hole in one breast for six months, requiring multiple follow-up surgeries.
And while I still think the would-be blue-eyed Londoner was naïve, she’s not crazy or even stupid. We’re surrounded by images promising a quick fix to any perceived imperfection, and she, like so many others, just made the mistake of believing.
