DEVENDRA BANHART
Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon (XL)
The charismatic avatar of the unfortunately named “freak folk” genre (alongside the likes of Joanna Newsom), Banhart’s brilliant new album demonstrates he can’t be pigeonholed any longer. Able to conjure memorable, surprising songs out of mere fairy dust, Banhart hits new heights here, as spontaneously eccentric as ever, but with more ambitious, layered production and arrangements. Songs like “Seahorse” evoke the jazzily nocturnal minor-key poetry of the Doors, brought up a notch by Banhart’s distinctively absurdist whimsy. —Matt Diehl
