Did Anna Wintour Advise Lady Gaga Against Going Pantless?

One can only imagine how a rendezvous between Lady Gaga and Anna Wintour might go. But were I to guess what exactly the pop star was doing in (to quote The September Issue) the Pope of fashion's office earlier this month, I'd wager that lack of pants was one topic of discussion. Outfitted in a Philip Treacy hat "with Vogue written on it," Gaga stopped by Wintour's offices mid-Fashion Week. Considering Lady Gaga's looks of late, it's clear she's not only embracing more high-end designers (Marc Jacobs, whose SS10 show she attended, for one), she's also more often than not covering her crotch (on-stage performances not included). Could Wintour be to thank/blame for Gaga dressing more ladylike? If the woman can make the likes of Andre Leon Talley and Oprah lose weight, I'd imagine she can put a stop to no-pants.

But whether or not Gaga has garnered Wintour’s approval, it’s impossible to ignore the fact that the former’s influence has surfaced everywhere this Fashion Week. Specifically, as far as NYFW is concerned, in the distinct lack of pants on catwalks. From L.A.M.B. and Marc Jacobs (pictured here), to Charlotte Ronson, Alexander Wang and Altuzarra, nearly a dozen designers thus far have embraced Gaga-like pantlessness for Spring 2010. Photographer Garance Dore is doing her part to motivate the no-pant masses. She writes: “Okay everyone, summer 2010, we’re together on this? Everyone, let it all hang out. You really gotta back me up on this or I’ll make a fool of myself. We’ll pick a day and all go out together in just our panties, yep, you too No&me, and you too Sophie, and don’t forget Naty. Okay. Everyone in?”
