DIY Thievery From Kate Spade

Last year, director Josh Safdie was commissioned by fashion mainstays Andy and Kate Spade to create a one-off video for Spade’s fashion week presentation. Kate Spade’s Ice Cream Soup was born. Happy with the celluloid, the Spades started putting money into Red Bucket Films (Safdie’s brother Benny is one of many Boston-bred co-founder buddies). Now, only a year later, Safdie’s film The Pleasure of Being Robbed, the first-ever release from Red Bucket, has received raves at SXSW, and has created buzz for the return of auteur cinema.

(Although, to be honest, we’re not sure that auteur cinema ever went anywhere. Harmony, we want your babies!)

The Pleasure of Being Robbed is being shown (not “premiered,” as these guys are anything but stuffy studio heads) on March 31st at a semi-secret screening in the East Village’s Anthology Film Archives. It’s a 16mm film about a philanthropic kleptomaniac, someone who steals from people while hugging them—which is pretty amazing in itself. Oh, and it’s funny. (With a stroke.)
