Empire State Turns Out the Lights
April 22, 2009
In honor of Earth Day, the Empire State Building is going dark at 9 p.m. tonight. However, the gesture will be purely symbolic, as the lights are only going out for one minute. If you get up to re-heat dinner in the microwave (energy hog!), you'll miss the blink on-and-off of the building's lights, which are currently green to symbolize Earth Day. The lights will remain green tomorrow as well, but for a slightly less noble reason.
Tomorrow’s green-lit skyscraper isn’t an extra show of Earth Day support, but rather a commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The pride is back! The real earth-friendly news is that, according to building officials, the Empire State is in the midst of a $20 million eco-makeover that will reduce the building’s carbon footprint and energy consumption.

I don’t see how celebrating TNMT’s anniversary is not a noble event…
