‘Gossip Girl’ Stylist Eric Daman on Spring Essentials & Chuck Bass Fridays
January 12, 2009
Meet Eric Daman, one of the most influential forces working in fashion today. While his name might not ring a bell, as stylist of the bona fide cult classic CW series Gossip Girl, Daman might as well be a household name. His aesthetic has garnered warm receptions from Fifth Avenue to middle America. But while Gossip Girl stylist-turned-fashion designer Abigail Lorick (who's responsible for designing Eleanor Waldorf’s namesake line on the show) has gained substantial recognition in recent months thanks to the successful launch of her eponymous women’s collection at New York Fashion Week last September, Daman has flown relatively under the radar. Until now!
In an interview featured today on A Shaded View On Fashion, Daman divulges just how far his stylistic reach extends within the show and reveals a Chuck Bass-inspired trend taking place at colleges around the country. Of the designers he chooses to highlight, the former model says, “Alexander Wang and Vena Cava were definitely not mentioned in the books but are essential on the fashion scene in today’s NYC. I felt it really important to incorporate these young designers into the vocabulary of the show as the socialite girls that GG is based on would know these designers, be the first to find them and the first to wear them. Think Zac Posen and Lola Schnabel ...” As for the spark that set off Jenny Humphrey’s recent punk-infused makeover: “she got turned on to The Runaways (70s US rock band) and (lead singer) Cherie Currie, who I love and think is a great icon for a teen girl to emulate stylistically.” With spring around the bend, Daman offers his five picks for warm weather must-haves: “the perfect trench in khaki or bright; a French sailor tee, a timeless classic; white jeans, skinny if you can do it; a dress or skirt conjuring Hitchcock’s Marnie (Tippi Hedren as a chic thief, look here) in an artsy aquarelle and a statement necklace.”
Daman likewise muses on why Chuck Bass’ dandy style has been so sensational. “It’s just un rêve (a dream) to dress a womanizing straight boy in such dandy apparel. I’ve read blogs from different colleges that actually have Chuck Bass Fridays. There is a whole movement behind him and his wardrobe which is sooo gratifying because, lets face it, men really should dress better.” While I agree with the latter, the thought of college campuses teeming with Chuck Bass look-a-likes is nothing less than terrifying.
