i love that all these pictures show how mundane new york is now!  one of the greatest dance clubs of all time is now a ....verizon store. another amazing rock club is now a… health food cafe. it’s perfect, really.

Blame it on the rich and foolish

Area was the best.  Agreed.  But you also forgot Au Bar and The Building…
Concur with above poster - the bright lights just aren’t as bright any more.

neither were forgotten both were omitted . au bar although heaven for some was a nightmare for me. the music was awful,at least to me and the crowd lacked diversity.. the building had a moment and those great frank lloyd wright chairs but doesn’t get close for me. what i did leave off was the copacabana.. it is the greatest club of its kind and did host many great events including ms bartsch

I’ve been going to clubs as long as Steve and know him from the early years so I agree.  These are the clubs that changed the face of the nightlife scene in NYC and across the world.  I went to all of the clubs he mentioned so I know.

Dude, please reach into your bag of tricks and conjure up another The World,
that was the only club and of course Robots after 4 am and The Choice

I agree with comment number 4 - the World.  I’ll help with the mobile marketing.

Hats off to Steve Lewis for an article that asks for “the best” in a difficult category.  Whilst I might have found a way to sneak a Club 57 on there, somewhere - or even the Gallery, the Loft, Crisco Disco, Hurrah or the Mudd Club - it’s a particularly well thought-out, comprehensive list with which no nightlife aficionado can really find fault with.

Although, if memory serves, it was “Xenon” (not Zenon).

Also - kudos for singling-out Amy Sacco’s Bungalow 8 as the shining light of contemporary venues.  Methinks it’s got a renaissance looming!

What a great piece! Obviously this is his personal list so offering up other clubs is quite silly. And no club is eternal so of course they are gonna close and become other things, Tricia. There are still good things happening in NYC its whether or not you choose to support them or just live in a land of “the good ole days”.

i spelled xenon correctly and a young editor must of thought me a fool. mudd club was an omission it certainly belongs and i was really torn on the loft , club 57 and hurrah . hurrah was the last cut
