“Holy Holes” @ Dumbo Arts Center

Middle America is a frightening land populated with a race of people destined to bring all of mankind to an imminent collapse with their oil consumption (both crude and Canola). But then again, the fish in this barrel have always been easy targets. So there's something endearing about "Holy Holes: Absolute Stalls" (through August 3 at New York's Dumbo Arts Center), an excellent exhibition that treats the inhabitants of Middle America rather anthropologically. The collection features pieces by artists like Joseph Bennett who aren't afraid to take the cheap shots, but then also explicate their below-the-belt blows with an intellectual exploration of the juncture of consumerism and blind faith.
This Sunday night, curator Denise Carvalho will offer more insight into this exhibition and its aim of the underlying ritualism rampant in modern consumerism. Until then, we can all invest our hard-earned green on an umpteenth viewing of The Dark Knight, or perhaps an extant bar tab at our favorite dives.
