Comment on Vilnius:
It is Lithuania as a state that is turning 1000 y.o. in 2009, not Vilnius. Vilnius was established in 1323.

I didn’t know there were nation states in Europe 1000 years ago. That means just about every history textbook sold in the Western World needs to be recalled and updated. I believe cities came first, nation states later, but alas, I could be purely delusional.
