JetBlue Stowaway, Back to Cuba, Statue of Liberty Re-Opens
March 31, 2009
● JetBlue (which is having yet another fantastic sale) had a stowaway passenger last Saturday. A 21-year old baggage handler crawled into the cargo hold to "take a nap" and wound up sealed inside the pressurized underbelly of the plane. He enjoyed a panicky ride from JFK to Boston, making several phone calls to JetBlue officials once he realized he was airborne, but he had to wait to be unloaded with the rest of the luggage at the gate in Boston.
● There’s a bill being introduced to Congress today that would lift the ban on US travel to Cuba. This ease in regulation would encourage tourism and agriculture exchange. Oh, also, sales of cigars would no doubt increase at a brisk pace.
● Lady Liberty is opening the doors to her crown for the first time since 9/11. Though the base, pedestal, and the observation deck have been open since August of 2004, the spiral staircase to the tip-top of the statue has remained closed for fear that, in case of an evacuation, people would get stuck in the stairs. The proposed solution to the “stuck in the stairs” scenario will be some imitation of the procedures at the Washington Monument, where visitors gain access through a ticket lottery and enter at specific times, in small numbers. Happy 233rd birthday, America.
