The Joie de Vivre chain of hotels is really flexing its social media muscles by working the hell out of Twitter, Facebook and cell phones. Take note, hospitality industry. On "Mobile Mondays," you can send out a text to 888999 with the subject "JdV" and bang! you can opt in to sweet offers for the next seven days valid at JdV hotels in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, and Sacramento. You might get a coupon for free cocktails or discounted spa treatments.
To follow that up, there’s Twitter Tuesdays and Facebook Fridays (yup, they’re all over it), where the chain tweets and posts deals and discounts like 30% off room rates, third night free, and $89 rates per night. While JdV might be the pioneer in ramping up social media use by a hotel chain, this is an encouraging forecast for the future of travel; getting deals tweeted, Facebooked, and texted right to your phone is miles better than a static website. I stayed at one of the JdV hotels in SF (the one in J-town). It was ok but I was not that impressed. The rooms were quite old and a little grimy. It wasn’t a bad value for the price, but the website had led me to believe that they were much more luxe.
