Lara Stone Doesn’t Want to Be Fat Anymore
September 22, 2009
The one model who didn't seem caught up in 'rexy runway stereotypes isn't totally free of body issues; in fact, she thinks she's fat. Lara Stone, the curvaceous -- yet still a size 4 thanks to distinctly small waist and incredibly fortunate proportions -- blonde mannequin equipped with a perfect Lauren Hutton-esque tooth gap and accompanying Jagger-like pout, recently owned up to her insecurities about her weights. While in the past Stone has acknowledged her decidedly different shape from most other waifs working in the industry, this is the first time she's exposed her efforts to ditch her curves in hopes of fitting into a far smaller mold.
“I don’t want to be the fat one anymore,” she told Elle UK. “I have just started doing Pilates every morning, then going to the gym, running, and swimming. I make sure to relax in the sauna after exercising.” Given all of the hope Stone has offered in terms of representing the fashion industry eventually widening its narrow vision of what body type women should have, the comments are disappointing. Are Crystal Renn and Lizzie Miller our only hope?

Yes oh yes, at a size 4 and feeling as if she is fat, it is painfully obvious that she has not gotten over her self image issues. It is also unfortunate that women such as her are held on such high pedistals as to what should be considered beautiful and attractive. It is attitudes such as this that has contributed to a very allarming, fast paced and growing trend of very young girls and young women starving themselves to be thin or the opposit, making themselves vomit every time they eat in order to not gain an ounce. Instead of embracing all women as beautiful and important, those that do not meet the industry standards are seen as useless and worthless, when in fact they are not. This just disgusts me.

Disappointing? She said she has started exercising more - not that she stopped eating and/or decided to embrace any number of eating disorders and diet pills.
While she is anything but fat (obviously), my offhand guess would be that she said that in the context of comparison vis a vis her colleagues. Some degree of her success seems to have been driven by just how different she is (particularly as of late) - I’d suspect her agent would have said as much.
In any event, this is all theorizing on my part.
