Liz Goldwyn Takes “Underwater Ballet” to the Streets

In an especially exciting convergence of fashion and art, Hollywood royalty/jewelry designer/filmmaker Liz Goldwyn is teaming up with director Aaron Rose (Beautiful Losers) -- one of the preeminent figures behind New York's burgeoning street art scene back in the 90s. Goldwyn recently completed work on a short film entitled "Underwater Ballet" (think Balanchine meets high fashion submerged under the sea) and is gearing up to debut the fruits of her labor on billboards both in her hometown of Los Angeles and NYC. And with Rose having handpicked artists for the Undefeated Billboard Project (a Nike-sponsored, LA-based public art endeavor) for the last five years, it’s a perfect fit.

Stills from “Underwater Ballet” will appear on 86 digital billboards across Los Angeles as of April 24, while the film will be screened in its entirety in NYC’s Times Square from May 1-6 (with audio available via cell phone). The film may also be seen on Goldwyn’s namesake (and newly revamped) website. The project is not only cool given the beauty of the film and the innovation behind it ("Underwater Ballet” was shot with a Phantom Camera, which captures 1,000 frames a second, and incorporates unique editing techniques), but for the sheer pairing of fashion, street art, and advertising. Besides, when was the last time you actually had a reason to go to Times Square?
