Matisyahu’s Festival of Light @ Webster Hall
December 22, 2008
Matisyahu kicked off the 3rd annual Festival of Light with part one of a three series show at Webster Hall last night--just in time to celebrate the first night of Hannukah. After an opening performance with The Crystal Method, who debuted a spanking new track in their 1-hour DJ set, the man of the hour took the stage and delivered reggae jam after reggae jam, interjected with several unintelligible chanting moments, and a supreme beat-boxing collaboration, all while skipping merrily around the stage.
After all of this, his endless reserve of talents became apparent, but alas, he was to be upstaged by the true star of the night: the Disco Dreidel. No Hannukah celebration is complete without a disco-sized-and-studded dreidel hovering above the dance floor; the lights, the music, the dreidel, it was magical. After every PDA in the audience had successfully captured a photo of the Disco Dreidel in its full reflective glory (most likely for “Happy Hannukah” text messages all week), attention was finally returned to the general stage area and the show proceeded as normal.
