Michelle Obama: To Vogue, or Not to Vogue?

That is the question. “Vogue has been campaigning for a Michelle Obama cover since last September,” reports WWD. And with all the recent fashion fury sparked by a particular election-night ensemble, the iconic fashion rag’s infamous editrix, Anna Wintour, must be yearning for a Michelle Obama cover as badly as an empty-calorie binge. While the future first lady has graced the front cover of such magazines as Newsweek and Ebony, as well as the occasional tabloid, so far she has only appeared within the inner pages of Vogue.

“Starting with Eleanor Roosevelt, it’s been a long-standing tradition to photograph the new first lady,” a Vogue spokesperson told WWD, adding, “needless to say, we are very interested in working with Mrs. Obama.” That said, should Michelle Obama land the cover, she would only be the second First Lady to do so (following in the footsteps of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s cover debut in December 1998). I, for one, would be very eager to see the fruits of such a fashion collaboration (one I would assume to most likely be snapped by shutterbug Annie Leibovitz), which would no doubt further showcase the First Lady Elect’s inimitable style. Likewise interested parties: be sure to stay tuned. Because, if the fate of yesterday’s historic edition of the New York Times is any indication (it’s currently selling on eBay for $100 or more), this hypothetical issue is sure to sell like haute couture hotcakes.
