NYC Gets Three New Pop-Up Shops
November 25, 2009
New York City has become the pop-up shop Mecca. From a corporate sponsored temporary space hawking high-fashion footwear to an art book shop that opened in Soho solely for the holiday shopping season, the number of impermanent boutiques around the city seems to be doubling every week. While UrbanDaddy and A Continuous Lean's much-anticipated pop-up shop closed this past weekend, now comes news of three more temporary spots: Alice & Oliva, Twinkle By Wenlan and JAPAN BRAND.
Alice & Olivia opened its temporary doors uptown in Scoop’s Upper East Side boutique last Friday with a fete that stuffed the store to capacity. (Tinsley Mortimer showing up with the camera crew for her new reality show didn’t help.) Stacey Bendet’s sequined party dresses and tuxedo jackets will make their home in the borrowed digs until after Christmas.
Meanwhile, Twinkle by Wenlan will be debuting its first-ever pop-up shop in NYC from December 10-12. According to Twinkle by Wenlan’s press release, “the ready-to-wear, accessories and home line’s pop-up will take over Cadillac’s Castle in the East Village to offer not only their fall and holiday 2009 collections but also re-issues of favorites pieces from the last decade, in celebration of their 10th anniversary.”
Later in the month, “Felissimo – the design house on 56th street in New York – is opening a JAPAN BRAND holiday pop up shop from Nov 23rd to Dec 24th,” says Josh Spear. While there won’t be much by way of wardrobe at this pop-up shop, it will be chock-full of fantastic gifts for the design lovers in your life. JAPAN BRAND’s focus is local and artisan-made objects, so think: hand-crafted, gold leaf encrusted chess sets and a one-of-a-kind lacquer bicycle courtesy of mixed media artist Andrew Gelman.
