New York Fasion Week Champions Comfort Clothes

Alexander Wang caused controversy when he sent a pair of cycling shorts down his catwalk last season, but judging from this New York Fashion Week it seems comfort dressing has hit a fever pitch. Wang wasn't the only one sending fabrics typically associated with lounge-wear (namely sweatsuit material) down his runway. In fact, while Wang showcased a sweatshirt and sweatpant-heavy, football-inspired Spring 2010 line, Scott Sternberg's Band of Outsiders, DKNY, Elie Tahari and Generra all followed suit, points out The Cut. Forget leggings, the new couch-come-sidewalk-worthy wardrobe item of choice for the fashion set is none other than sweatpants.

Also making its mark on Spring 2010 is overalls. The frock long preferred by farmers and coal miners showed up on Ralph Lauren’s Dust Bowl reference-ridden runway, as well as in Steven Alan’s collection for next season. In other words, never say never when it comes to certain styles becoming the epitome of chic. Besides, slipping on a pair of Wang-approved sweatpants is a hell of a lot more comfortable than a heavily shoulder-padded Balmain mini-dress (think of it as the sartorial equivalent to downing a pint of Ben & Jerry’s). And who knows, maybe the track suit will be the next sweatsuit? Fidel would surely approve.
