Openings: Canary Hotel

If you get past the rather twee moniker and plunk down a rather pretty penny (well, 30,000 of them), you may lay claim to the considerable charms of Santa Barbara’s newest boutiquer, the Canary Hotel (opened in late April). Luckily, the place is not a bright riot of birdy yellow. Michael S. Smith’s interior scheme actually draws upon the inviting aesthetic blitheness of Spain’s Canary Islands, with Spanish-tiled bathrooms and Moroccan accents.
Rooms are restrained contemporary, with dramatic French doors and nifty balconies. And lest you forget that Santa Barbara is just a short hybrid-Lexus ride from LA-LA-Ville, amenities include organic and do-gooder mini-bar snackies, as well as yoga mats and DVDs (don’t expect to bump into Keith Richards here). And paying homage to the Central Coast’s lofty position in the American wine order, an oenophilic eatery, Coast, is on site. Rehab for stress addicts.
