Openings: Salon De Ning @ Peninsula Hotel

Before the ravages of war and those party-pooping Commies came along, Shanghai was a glittering city of profligate decadence and not insignificant glamour -- the Paris of the East, they called it. And as of May 16, New York’s uber-poshie Peninsula Hotel is offering a glimpse into those halcyon days with Salon de Ning, the new rooftop space that replaces its late, lamented Pen-Top Bar.
Inspired by the considerable good taste of the late Shanghai socialite and internationalist Madame Ning, the romantic, glass-enclosed indoor bar will feature Venetian mirrors and carved Chinese screens. The two massive outdoor terraces will offer lots of seeing and being seen on Chinese daybeds, under the sensual glow of genuine Moroccan lanterns. Who knew getting Shanghai’d could be so fabulous?
