Passion Pit’s Sci-Fi Video For “Little Secrets”: Screensavery

Passion Pit: we gotta have a talk. Sit down. Let's discuss this "Little Secrets" video for a moment. Your album, which I think I once read described as akin to "diving head-first into a ball-pit filled with MDMA-stocked grapes," still sounds fresh after months of good listening. You're not a band that needs music videos; instead, you're a band who -- and I'm a huge fan -- needs to work on making live performances more substantial, and a band that needs to put money where mouths (and high-pitched voices that will wreak hell on vocal chords) are. Instead, what time, effort, and cash have you spent on music videos? Put it somewhere else. And if you've got to spend it on videos, this one? "Little Secrets" is my favorite track on the album. This treatment's just lazy.

No, I don’t like it. This looks like a really high-test screensaver that’s been left on for too long. There’s a star that’s flying around, and then it turns into a car that’s going really fast, and then you see a guy who’s either in it or watching it, and then it looks like what happens you get to the 2,012th level of Missile Command. Seriously, look:
They should outlaw things that are intended to give people epileptic seizures. It’s just mean.
Then you find out that a guy is driving the shooting star-Buick Lightspeed, and he looks really uncomfortable and is writing in his stylish fishbowl hipster helmet. Then, like an asshole, he drives straight into a field of purple ribbons. And then he decides to take a scenic route by the sun, or something, but the sun is shooting these sperm-shaped things at him, which is when he weirdly starts to creepily smile. And hey, look, it’s Earth, there’s a pretty landing, we’re not sure if he’s gonna end up burned to a crisp in the atmosphere or not but he appears to be headed towards Boston, so fuckit, we don’t even care whether he lands or crashes or just, I don’t know, turns into an interstellar parachuting giraffe, because the video and the song ends.
I really want to like Passion Pit, and I could give a shit about this video. Some people might like it. I just hope their live shows get better and that maybe they’ll take the time to put the Kids Who Sing Coldplay Better Than Coldplay Sings Coldplay (who are also on “Little Secrets") in one of their videos. And also, sigh, that they could’ve waited another few months to get “Sleepyhead” licensed into a commercial. Until then, I’ve got that Chiddy Bang joint they’re on to hold me over.
