Portishead Change Their Tune, It’s Jarring

A certain Portis-topped trio from Bristol is re-emerging with their first proper album since 1997’s Dummy. It’s called Third (a presumed tribute to the album’s place in their discography). The album’s first single “Machine Gun,” debuted yesterday on DJ Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show and is now available for download and purchase on the band’s official site, and um, other places. The song is jarring.
Absent are Portishead’s trademark smoky string arrangements, which have been replaced with a guttural, stuttering drum-machine assault. The album is out on April 29 in the U.S., and for true Portisheadheads, there are 10,000 limited-edition box-sets available on the band’s website. They’re also Portis-headlining (last time, promise) the Coachella music festival, which runs from April 25-27 in Indio, California.
