Reed and Schnabel’s Slumber Party!

"So... did you get a pen in the gift bag?" we ask, wondering if we missed out on serious swag at Sunday night's Montblanc-sponsored after-party for Julian Schnabel's latest documentary, Berlin. "No, but the girl at the door checked my name off her list with one." Relief.
Schnabel’s follow-up to The Diving Bell and the Butterfly centers on the controversy that plagued Lou Reed‘s Berlin when it was first released in 1973. About two German lovers, the album was criticized and later shelved. Over time, however, it gathered critical acclaim, cult success, and is now lauded as one of Reed’s most powerful albums ever.
When, 33 years later, Lou Reed took the stage at St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn, friend Julian Schnabel was nearby with his camera (and stayed there, for five nights, as Reed performed alongside the likes of Antony Hegarty and Sharon Jones). One critic who saw the film told us that it was the “best concert documentary in recent history.”
The guests at the screening after-party—held at Core, a dazzling Midtown space with a grand piano—shared the sentiment. In addition to Schnabel (dressed in pajamas, of course) and Reed, those in attendance included producer Harvey Weinstein, Vogue Editor-at-Large André Leon Talley, actor Michael Imperioli, designer Zac Posen, and one Montblanc pen.
