The fifties used soundtracks as promotional gimmicks for new films (Elvis!), the Sixties as a Greek chorus narrative (The Graduate), the Seventies as aural atmosphere (Saturday Night Fever), the Eighties as punctuation (Top Gun) and Nineties as throwback (Pulp Fiction).  Now, in the noughties we’ve crossed the rubicon, with actors playing musicians singing the soundtrack (Once).  Just a half-step away from a musical!  Huzzah to Alison!  More please!
