The Breeders’ Drivin’ on 9
Kim and Kelley Deal know a bit about road-trip songs. They wrote one of the best (see headline).

KELLEY DEAL:
1. I would have to have my Bill Monroe box set transferred to cassette ’cause Kim doesn’t have a stupid CD player in the car.
2. And maybe the newest Sue Grafton audio cassette book. Is it on the letter “T” now? That’s worth a good 22 hours.
KIM DEAL:
3. Kelley, I would transfer that box set of The Band onto cassette.
4. I would also take the time to transfer Neil Young’s “Don’t Cry No Tears” three times in a row onto a cassette. I’ve become obsessed. Inexplicable, really.
5. Pavement. Which one is the one with “Silent Kid”? Slanted and Enchanted? [Ed note: No, it’s on Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. (And it’s called “Silence Kit.”)]
6. Th’ Faith Healers’ Lido. Because I haven’t heard it in awhile and I used to love it. Doesn’t that guy have a new band now? [Ed note: He does—Quickspace.]
7. “TB Sheets” by Van Morrison. I have to find that mix tape though. It’s on some obscure compilation album, isn’t it? One with the Everly Brothers doing “T for Texas, T for Tennessee.” I struggle with the volume/frequency (sound, not times) of the tambourine but I really think this sounds good.
8. Simon Schama’s “A History of Britain” series on audio cassette. Or just play the DVD on the portable player in the car. Pull over. No, exit, pull into a hotel, and just watch it in the hotel room. And go to sleep.
The Breeders are on tour in support of their new album, Mountain Battles.
