The Comic Book History of Hitler Bashing

One of the more common gripes about Inglourious Basterds is that it’s nothing but a puerile revenge fantasy that, at its worst, is damaging to our shared historical consciousness. Over at The Exploding Kinetoscope, Chris Stangl offers a thorough and utterly convincing counter-argument asserting (among other things) that Tarantino’s flagrantly a-historical brand of WWII wish fulfillment is nothing new. As early as 1941, renowned comic book artist Jack Kirby was affording readers the imaginary catharsis of seeing Captain America go toe-to-toe with Hitler. This inevitably got me thinking about what other caped crusaders might have doubled as Fuhrer-Fighters in their day. Turns out, quite a few!
