I write a Nightlife blog for Tourism Montreal and we’ve been trying to do the same- steer tourists away from the obvious.

So, recently they let me write about a corner store that sells 500 kinds of beer

I am the marketing director for the South Street Seaport, and while it is true some shops in Pier 17 can be found in other NYC neighborhoods, I am taken aback that your editorial team would exclude such distinguished programs like the Seaport Music Festival, Fulton Stall Market, Water Taxi Beach or Seaport Ice Rink – that give the Seaport a distinctive New York flare.  What actually makes the Seaport unique is that it thrives on both the tourists who visit and by locals and area residents who come for free concerts, a weekly farmers market, public art projects and many great new restaurants along Front Street – and yes, a beach.

This summer so far has been one of our strongest line ups of free concerts including; Casiokids, Here we Go Magic, NYC Opera and the Brooklyn Philharmonic to name a few.  On September 2nd at 7pm Seaport will host a free show by John Fogerty.

I’d like to invite your ‘staff panel of self-proclaimed Manhattanites’ down for a visit to see what they may have missed the first time around, there is a lot more here than meets the eye.

Hey, Palsgrove IV, I hear what you’re barking about, but let’s get real here. I used to live on Fulton and Gold, just a few steps from your precious seaport, and let me tell you, it’s little more than a scenic shopping mall. It’s a mob scene of fanny-packs and ‘I hear NY shirts’ on weekends, and the restaurants that I dined at would have been totally forgettable if not for being on the waterfront.

I wont argue for a moment that the area is not aesthetically pleasing, but there’s little substance to support any claims that it’s really “more than meet’s the eye.” As the prolific auteur Kevin Smith via Silent Bob once said, “What’s a good plate with nothing on it?”

Once the Fulton Fish Market shuttered it’s doors and hiked up to the Bronx, any semblance of authenticity remaining in the Seaport left along with it. You’re the marketing director so you have to talk this place up, and rightfully so, as that’s what they pay you the big bucks for. That said, your opinion is far from impartial.

The only thing I disagree with is the Carnegie Deli one.  It’s delicious!!  I’ve heard Katz’ is real good though.

The pastrami on rye is the best of any of them though.  Great choice.
