It hurts when one loses to a kid, you know, in a race or at cards. That's why adults cheat at cards and trip the little tykes during an otherwise friendly footrace (just us?). That's why we send our kids to bed to "think long and hard" about gloating the next time they win. (Last Christmas Eve: "Timmy, no one likes a sore winner, especially not the fictional fat man who won't, by the by, be stopping here tonight.) That said, get ready for Tiny Masters of Today, one of the biggest ego-crushers in recent memory.

Together, Ivan (thirteen-year-old on guitar and vocals) and Ada (his eleven-year-old sister on bass and vocals) have secured their position as rock heavyweights despite a combined weight of 120 lbs.

They started their punk-infused garage-rock outfit in 2004 (yeah, Ada was still in the single digits), and have since garnered accolades from the likes of David Bowie and Russell Simins of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Simins began canvassing for a gig as their live drummer, and Ada remembers, “Our parents had to talk to him first and make sure he wasn’t some psycho.”

On their latest album Bang Bang Boom Cake, the Tiny Masters team up with ex-moldy peach Kimya Dawson, Karen O and Nick Zinner from Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and members of the B-52s and Butthole Surfers. They’ve recently opened for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Man Man, and Matt and Kim (their twenty-something analogue).

All this is to say that we are huge fans, but that we also intend to steal their lunch money or something to make ourselves feel better. —Nick Haramis
