What’s Next: Risqué Crochet
April 28, 2009
As we’ve somehow transported bodysuits, lace, mesh, and body-con dresses straight from the 90s back into our closets, it seems racy pieces are making a huge comeback -- especially now that summer is around the corner. However, this time we’re making it right by balancing provocative elements with masculine layers and edgy accessories. Think a tight-fitted mini-dress with a vintage jean jacket or a sexy monokini under easy slacks. Experiment with this proportion by incorporating another throwback into your wardrobe: crochet wear.
It’s not just a grandmother’s hobby anymore. Crocheted pieces can be worn anytime, anywhere; and unlike lace, the look is perfect for the beach. Layer it over a bikini or ruched tube top and cut-off jeans. The delicate peephole effect allows you to reveal some skin without going overboard, and the intricate patterns make every piece look a little bit different. Just remember to keep it subtle—one crocheted piece per outfit—or else you’ll end up looking like a runaway doily.
Examples: Maurie & Eve crochet back singlet, Sass & Bide In Other Words top, Ecote crochet inset tunic, Free People rugged trim vest, Rachel Comey net half ruffle top, Betsey Johnson Black Magic bikini.
