Why Are ‘Twilight’ Fans Hating on Nikki Reed?

It's not terribly hush-hush that much of the Twilight franchise's tertiary cast is comprised of critical darlings. As such, Bryce Dallas Howard and Catalina Sandino Moreno recently came aboard the franchise. However, Nikki Reed has been biding her time as the vampire Rosalie Hale. Although she made one of her premiere dents in showbiz starring in the Oscar-nominated Thirteen alongside Evan Rachel Wood (who, curiously, plays a vampire on another popular soap these days.) So, in spite of all the K-Stew love, why is there so much hate for Reed?

Reed tells MTV about some recent hateration: “You know? I’m really devastated right now, because I have never heard the amount of criticism and hurt and pain from some things that I’ve read going on the Internet [about me] right now.” Among some of the bitchery she’s observed? Critiques that have plagued Reed range from “She’s fat,” to “She’s supposed to be the most beautiful girl in the world?” and include the odd “Couldn’t they cast someone who was remotely beautiful?” Maybe what K-Stew said about fame being cold, distant, and like hanging out under the shadow of death itself resonates even harder when you’re not only trying to prove your acting chops, but also trying to shoehorn your way into completely arbitrary beauty standards.

She even goes as far to acknowledge the industry’s biggest open secret—workers who troll through their own IMDB profiles to read feedback. She says, “But any actor that says they don’t look at the IMDb boards is lying.” More to the point, she argues, “At what point do IMDb boards became discussion boards for people who want to say negative things? Wasn’t the Internet Movie Database supposed to be work-related or filled with compliments because you go to that person’s board if you want to say something nice about their work? At what point did it become this battleground?” Although Reed’s outlook remains sunny nonetheless, with her counting a million supporters for every detractor.
