Winona Ryder Bites Back
Nick Haramis
November 02, 2009
Written and directed by Rebecca Miller—wife of Daniel Day-Lewis as well as the daughter of playwright Arthur Miller and photographer Inge Morath—Pippa Lee felt like a homecoming for Ryder. “I’ve known Keanu since I was 16, so he’s sort of like a brother to me. I know Robin from when I used to live in San Francisco. I know and love Rebecca through Daniel [with whom Ryder starred in The Crucible and The Age of Innocence] and Arthur [who wrote The Crucible and its screenplay].”
Sandra might not be richest role of Winona Ryder’s career, nor will it be her crowning achievement. But after all of the good, all of the bad and, yes, a touch of ugly, Ryder has finally gotten to the point in her life where acclaim and validation are no longer necessary. She leans in as if to reveal her greatest secret yet: “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I’m not going to turn into Gloria Swanson and sit in my mansion watching my movies, with a crazy cigarette holder,” she says. “But I feel so blessed to have done the things that I’ve done.”
Back when she was still a teenager, her friend Sean Penn wagered $500 that she would tire of acting by her 30th birthday. “But that hasn’t happened yet,” she says as the sun sets on Hollywood. “I still don’t sleep the night before my first day on set. It’s a struggle to make good movies today, and I’ve certainly been in films I’m not thrilled with. I just have to be patient and good in my own life, and know that if I never work again, I still had a great career.”

I, too, hate the acronym “Lol” but Winona is so wrong about the state of mental health institutions it’s laughable. People are held against their will for the most minor of transgressions ALL THE TIME.

“… an impeccable arthouse film starring Robin Wright Penn, Blake Lively and Keanu Reeves. “
I can’t wait to see how badly this go down. Penn, Reeves, and Ryder joining forces with the Burger King face from Gossip Girl and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants? This is going to be sublime.

so now we can add liar to her resume. winona seems a bit delusional as well.
most blogs are talking about the fact that winona is a basket case and that ANGELINA did thank her at the oscars. it’s on youtube for petesakes.

This magazine has style.

I’ve read the sentiment before, that the Jolie character
somehow overshadowed the main character in Girl,
Interrupted...but I’ve never thought this myself.
_______
I’ve seen the film a few times, and each time my eye
always follows the Ryder character. And listens to
what she has to say.
_______
Like the cat in the film, I respond to the main
character.

Don’t blame Winona, the tone of this catty piece is ALL the interviewer’s (Nick Haramis).
.
If you doubt, do a Google search on ‘Corner Bistro Incident.’ He’s a petty little liar of a man as evidenced by that shameful episode.
.
He also seems to be a misogynist. Ryder seems to come across as slightly emotionally disturbed, and this isn’t the first time he’s attempted to slyly punch Angelina Jolie in the head.
.
“Brother kissing maneater with chaise lounge lips,” is how he is claiming the media saw Jolie, and thus in an effort to play her up ‘reduced Ryder to scorned actress.’ That’s a nice fairy tale, but in terms of what actually occurred back then it’s a falsehood. I was around then, and I recall Jolie’s win, moreover I recall her reputation at the time, and it was as an ‘actor’s actor.’ She had won multiple high profile acting accolades and had done The Bone Collector with Denzel Washington that same year.
.
Not to mention having ‘Gia,’ under her belt (the award laden drama about supermodel Gia Carangi who died of AIDS) - but more importantly, the salacious insulting tabloid descriptives he uses for Jolie, ‘brother kissing,’ and ‘maneater, hadn’t even come to the fore.
.
She was a 21 or 22 yr old, and had been married since she was 19 to Johnny Lee Miller. This was pre-Pitt and pre Thornton. Man-eating who? Her husband?
.
Goading Ryder into some b*tchy moment regarding Jolie, is typical of Haramis’ character.

By the way, am glad to see thousands coming out of the woodwork, much like with what happened re the Corner Bistro Incident and putting Haramis on blast for getting it wrong, per his usual. Google and Youtube are your friend Mr. Haramis. Jolie did thank Ryder, apparently a couple of times. Moreover Ryder has proclaimed several times she liked Jolie and wished she could have gotten to know her better, but understood the process being what it was (protagonist vs antagonist in the film) may have prevented that.

Thank you for the follow up comment.

Intriguing is how we can read the same article and
come away with different thoughts.
______________
For example, I found that the article confirmed my
impressions of Ms Ryder: An interesting woman,
with a high I.Q. and emotional intelligence to
match.

“I hate all these doublespeak abbreviations like ‘OMG’ and ‘LOL.”
Winona is the first grandma of Generation X.
Evolution is good for you.
