Leonard Cohen in the House (of Worship)

It was one big Yom and dance during the traditionally solemn holiday.

The crowd at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in L.A. for Yom Kippur special services got a real treat on Friday night: Leonard Cohen was singing with the cantors. He’s a member of the Ohr Hatorah synagogue in West Los Angeles, which holds High Holy Day services at the Wilshire Ebell. The crowd also got to hear David Mamet give a Yom Kippur speech, and Jon Favreau cracked jokes before it all started—the only thing they didn’t get to see was temple member Joel Crey sing and dance. “Not on Yom Kippur,” he told a friend. This was more cultural than any L.A. theater event could ever wish to be! —M.G.
