The Gawker Stalker is Dead!
Last week, the embittered online peanut gallery known as Gawker shocked the world (Fine, New York. Fine, Manhattan. Um, Spring Street?) when its managing editor, Choire Sicha, stepped down for his second time since starting with the site in 2003. By his side were resident cynics Emily Gould and Joshua Stein. They were, apparently, tired of spending their lives putting other people down. More surprising, however, is how human they all seem without the protective shield of the intraweb. In an interview with Gothamist, Sicha explains the process by which Gawker staff post blog items: “The problem is that you get up in the morning and you realize you’re twenty minutes late, so you have to write a couple things fast before you have coffee and who’s not going to suffer from that? There are a couple every week I’m sure are totally jackass and stupid.” If we didn’t not like them at all, we might actually like them.
Anyway, now that the unholy trinity have jumped ship, Gawker will continue, (other people’s) business as usual. Says Gould, in an interview with WWD, “Whatever Gawker originally set out to do, it kind of did, and now it just feels over. I would love it if it just fell off the face of the earth. I don’t want to say the meanest thing or the most shocking thing possible anymore, because it gets so old and so soul-killing.”
