What’s the greatest cycling movie of all time? If you said Breaking Away, you might be right. If you said The Triplets of Belleville, you might be right. If you said The Bicycle Thief, you’re probably right. But you’re forgetting the obvious contender, the greatest cinematic love affair between a man and his two-wheeled, handlebar-laden apparatus, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.
Now, the Paul Reubens-helmed cult classic salutes bike lovers everywhere, as Podium Cycling introduces, of course, a Lycra skinsuit in the shape and style of Pee-Wee’s trademark gray, red bowtie-topped suit from the movie. As the team at Podium Cycling, who make the Pee-Wee themed skinsuits and sell them for around $150 a pop, write:
"If you’re a comedic lover, this Skinsuit is the right fit for you! Here at Podium we not only aim to meet the need of professional cyclists, but to give them a special edge, like distracting the guy behind you, and making the spectators love you. This skinsuit is made of the best quality polyester fabric mix, allowing for durability, flexibility and style. Designed to help you tackle those bike rides with humor, this skinsuit is a classic."
We’re not sure what a "comedic lover" is, but we assume it means someone who is a lover of something or other and takes to loving with a sense of humor. And we’re not sure what advantage the Pee-Wee suit would have for those on the professional cycling circuit. There’s the distraction angle, which we suppose is still better than performance-enhancing drugs, but wouldn’t it ultimately come off as a gimmick? If Lance Armstrong had worn a Pee-Wee Herman skinsuit to his Oprah interview, would America feel the same way? Only time will tell. Anyway, here’s a classic scene from one of the greatest cycling movies of all time.
