Last night, makeup artist, author, and green-lover Lina Hanson stepped out to celebrate the release of her latest book Eco-Beautiful: The Ultimate Guide to Natural Beauty and Wellness at Sustainable NYC and supported by Zico (an eco-friendly sports drink we know around the office as the coconut-water hangover cure) and Johnny Love vodka (not sure if it's considered green, but vodka alone is worth mentioning). Hanson, who has worked with everyone from Brooke Shields to Elijah Wood, was excited to share her insight on getting eco-beautiful -- something Lina says isn't just a shallow buzzword. "Becoming eco-beautiful is about being good to the environment," she says, "and being good to yourself." The book covers everything from skin-friendly diets to DIY masks and brings a great zen approach to getting all made up for a night out. Below, some of my favorite tips straight from Hanson.
Age Fighting Superfoods: Artichokes: An anti-oxidant veggie that boosts circulation, which fights skin drooping. Beetroots: Purple powerhouse of anthocyanins, which promote collagen production in the body (so you don't have to get it injected). Cranberries and blueberries: Delish, and they have ant-inflammatory properties to ward off early morning under-eye bags. Goji berries: These guys have linoleic acid, which plumps up the top layer of your skin to keep it taut. Kale: If you're looking to detox, kale may as well be the liver's personal janitor. Sweet potatoes: Sweet and rich in vitamin A, which has the ability to renew skin cells.
DIY Skin Cleansers Normal skin: Mix organic milk with sea salt, dab on face, and let it dry for 2 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water. Oily skin: Juice a lemon (organic of course) and puree half of a cucumber, apply to face, and rinse with cold water. Pores will tighten, and your skin will stay cool for hours Dry skin: Organic cream, milk, and dried chamomile flowers should be heated on the stove for about half an hour. The concoction is left to cool, then used to relieve super-dry skin.
BYOP: Bring your own polish to your salon Hanson suggests some green (figuratively speaking) companies: Peacekeeper nail Paint Polished Mama Nail Polish Priti Nail Polish Sula Nail Polish Zoya Nail Polish
