This September, American retailers will get one night of sleep back during the chaotic circus that is fashion week. Fashion's Night Out has just revealed that, until further notice, the one-night street party is going on hiatus in the United States.

"Launched in New York City at the height of the 2009 recession, Fashion's Night Out was a celebration of shopping during a time when it was sorely needed," FNO explains on its site. "By 2012, FNO had expanded to stores in over 500 cities nationwide and 30 cities around the globe. After four exciting and successful years, Fashion's Night Out will go on hiatus in the United States in 2013, in order to enable retailers to channel their resources towards strategies more in keeping with their current priorities."

In short, booking celeb appearances, curating swanky giftbags and staffing stores through the wee hours of the night costs money and a lot of it. Kudos to FNO for realizing that, although the festivities sound like fun (give or take nightmarish crowds and blistering feet), U.S. retailers need to focus less on celebrating and more on increasing sales. This, in turn, will really give them something to celebrate about.
