At this year's Salone del Mobile design week, Milan saw its usual contenders in cutting-edge home design -- the classics, the contemporaries, and now the couturiers. Fashion designers crossing into the domestic arena is no new concept, but what happens when a designer who thrives solely on concept makes such a move? We're about to find out, as mystery man himself Martin Margiela unveils his eponymous line of stuff for the home.
We generalize with "stuff" only because the actual line has yet to materialize. Lab coat-clad design consultant and international press manager Samantha Garrett waxed, "We don't even know what we're going to do, or when. It's a work in progress." The presentation took the form of the Margiela design lab in Paris -- literally.
The idea was to recreate the workspaces of the architects responsible for the brand's boutiques from Paris to Milan for the week, showcasing the many concepts that have helped define the line over time. White walls and tables were decked with empty bottles made into lamps, blank Russian dolls, lucite molds for the famous hoof shoes, and of course dismembered mannequin body parts -- the whole environment sterilized by a white sheet or thick coating of white paint.
And though we've seen all these pieces subtly decorating the Margiela boutiques around the globe, will we eventually see them in our homes? Like every great piece from Maison Martin Margiela, the mystery is always worth the wait.
