Back in high school she may have cut classes, while he flunked his -- but, today, Isabel and Ruben Toledo are continually schooling the fashion industry on how to stay ahead of the curve. Partners both professionally as well as romantically, the duo garnered SCAD's Lifetime Achievement back in May. Now, FIT is paying homage to Isabel and her designs (which have won the favor of the First Lady herself, who donned Toledo's line for Inauguration Day) with a recently opened retrospective. The exhibition, titled "Fashion From The Inside Out," spans the designer's career and is on view in NYC through September 26.
Meanwhile, Ruben is likewise reflecting on the past with his latest project. The illustrator has signed on with Penguin Classics Deluxe Editions to recreate the covers of three classic tomes: "Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, for which he interpreted Elizabeth Bennet’s rejection of Mr. Darcy in black and white; Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlett Letter, for which he gave his take on Hester Prynne's fateful letter “A”; and Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, for which he draws Catherine Earnshaw wandering eerily on the Yorkshire moors," says Fashionologie, who has images of all three covers. Ruben's works, on the other hand, don't drop until August 25. And at $11 a pop, it's not a bad way to invest in a Toledo original.
