Call it the Avatar effect: Burberry's Christopher Bailey is pulling a page from James Cameron's book. WWD is reporting that Burberry will live stream its upcoming presentation in 3-D in five of the world's major cities, New York, Tokyo, Dubai, Paris and Los Angeles, with "preshow behind-the-scenes, backstage and red-carpet entertainment from London before the runway show." It's invite only.

The creative director behind Burberry is no slouch when it comes to exploration of the digital frontier. Burberry launched one of the fashion industry's first brand-sponsored social network with The Art of the Trench and Bailey was one of the first fashion heavyweights to embrace live streaming (a trend that truly hit its stride at this past season of men's fashion shows).

While the concept of watching a fashion show live as it's taking place thousands of miles away in 3-D is thrilling for anyone in theory (still photos a la Style.com continually fail to do justice to even remotely dynamic fashions), the fact that Burberry's screenings are invite-only is a bit annoying. Aren't the web and technological advancements supposed to aid the democratization of fashion? What would really be amazing is a live, 3-D show put on for the public.
