LA has long been struggling to establish itself as a major sartorial hub. But save for designers like Scott Sternberg of Band of Outsiders and Boy, and the Mulleavy sisters behind Rodarte, few Angelenos have managed to land themselves on the international map (Ed Hardy I won't even touch). But, a few fashion industry alumnae are looking to change that with a newly launched online porthole, StyleSectionLA. Founders include former LAT employees Emili Vesilind and Erin Weinger as well as ex-DNR (the now defunct men's equivalent of WWD) staffer Andrew Harmon.
The site reads much like a straightforward online magazine, with glossy, well-styled original editorial spreads as well as lengthier prose including designer profiles and trend reports. StyleSectionLA promises a new feature daily and boasts a blog, helping content maintain a sense of freshness. As Racked LA's Erin Magner points out, "compared to New York, there isn't much in the way of localized online fashion media in LA." I'd have to join Magner in saying, "we're all for anyone who wants to add to the conversation." But given the fact that LA houses a rather emaciated sartorial scene generally speaking, it'll be interesting to see how much original content StyleSectionLA can manage to serve up.
