It’s a well-known fact that, when it comes to fashion, Michelle Obama prefers American designers. From J.Crew to Tom Binns and Thakoon, the First Lady-Elect has given prominent camera time to stateside-based designers, be their brands seasoned or not-yet-established in the industry. And now she’s at it again.
Mrs. Obama’s latest frock of choice is from Jason Wu, a 23-year-old designer already on his way to fashion stardom (he was nominated for a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award this year, though Alexander Wang snapped up the honor). The dress in question was a $3,510 raw silk number with hand-embroidered rosettes from Wu’s SS09 collection, which Mrs. Obama sported for an interview with Barbara Walters. For those speculating as to whether or not the First Lady-Elect actually pays for her designer wardrobe, Wu assured the Wall Street Journal that the dress was indeed paid for in full.
