Men's fashion is really hitting its stride with artist and designer collaborations this fall. Just yesterday I posted on Michael Stipe teaming up with Maison Martin Margiela, as well as John Bartlett and Alex Carlton's soon-to-debut collaboration. Now comes news that both musician Pharell Williams (no stranger to fashion or furniture design) is teaming with iconic French fashion brand Moncler, while avant-garde artist Terrence Koh is partnering up with Converse. Williams is following in the footsteps of quite a few designers (Thom Browne has designed a capsule collection for Moncler in the past, as has Visvim, a Japanese streetwear brand), designing a special edition of men’s jackets. "The all-black lineup will make its debut for fall 2010 and includes a 'pacifist' version of the bulletproof jacket, with Velcro-ed side slits, reversible matte/shiny down vests and elongated puffers," says Women's Wear Daily.
And Williams isn't just making a social statement via his designs; he's doing so with his materials as well. "Mirroring Williams’ environmental activism, the jackets are fashioned using textiles from Bionic, a three-year-old company he controls. Bionic spins yarns and fabrics from recycled plastic bottles," adds WWD. While Williams' collection will be all-black (save for the linings which feature images of forests photographed at dusk by Japanese artist Keita Sugiura), Terrence Koh's collaboration with Converse is all white. The downtown NYC artist created a pair of high-top, monochrome leather sneakers for the iconic brand, which will retail for $150 a pop at Opening Ceremony starting November 21. While the price may seem a bit steep, keep in mind the designs are part of Converse's artist series -- meaning, the brand will donate a percentage of the shoes' sales to help fight AIDS in Africa.
