What's in store for Fall/Winter 2010 women's wear is still unknown (although pre-fall collections, which took place recently, suggest the looks will be decidedly darker and more grown up), but with the next round of men's shows just around the corner, in January, it's time to see what's in store for the fellas. Chalk it up to the Mad Men effect or a recession-induced appetite for the swinging sixties, but styles from the days of JFK and the Civil Rights Movement are making a comeback. "For fall 2010, tailored clothing manufacturers are opting for the retro Sixties look as the unifying trend, says Women's Wear Daily. The slim suit is then being modernized with textural fabrics and herringbones.
And, in sync with the current suit nostalgia is a book called "Sharp Suits," being released early next year. Journalist Eric Musgrave is the scribe behind the new coffee table tome, which Women's Wear Daily describes as "a celebration of men’s tailoring over the past 150 years, from the moment posh British men swapped their frock coats and morning dresses for lounge suits to designers’ current obsession with suiting celebrities." In light of the book's upcoming release, Musgrave muses on the major changes that have taken place in suiting over the years, like fabric getting lighter and the democratization of men's wear post WWI and WWII. What you won't see in Musgrave's book: black suits, "with the exception of Tom Ford — because they are boring to look at and hard to photograph."
