New York Fashion Week is not at all democratic, from the cost of securing a catwalk at Bryant Park to the hierarchy that determines seating assignments (if you’re lucky enough to garner an invite in the first place). But now it seems change may be coming to Fashion Week -- that is, if organizers determined to open show tickets to the public (for a price) have their way.
According to Portfolio, a recent informal poll conducted by Women’s Wear Daily of “105 women in New York stores and on the streets found they were willing to pay for the privilege of sitting in a tiny chair and watching expressionless models walk by.” As far as the cost of said imaginary ticket, prices are guestimated in the ballpark of $160 a pop with regard to top shows such as Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, and the like. So far, the concept has yet to win the support of fashion heavyweights like Diane Von Furstenberg, IMG’s Fern Mallis, or Michael Kors. But given the increasing toll that the recession is taking on the fashion world, it will be interesting to see if any of the aforementioned parties change their tune for the Spring 2010 presentations, slated to take place in New York come September. Meaning you have plenty of time to ponder whether or not you would drop close to $200 for 11 minutes of stylish parade and a chance to rub shoulders with Anna Wintour.
